Planning Your Wedding

Who pays for what?

Traditionally it was the Brides parents who “footed the bill”. Now things have changed and it is not unusual for older couples to pay for the celebration themselves or for both sets of parents to share the cost. Whatever way agree all at the outset and avoid rancour later.

Do it on a budget

  • Borrow your outfits or buy second-hand
  • Choose a lounge suit you can wear anytime
  • Contact your local college and see if they would design your wedding dress as a project – you pay for the material and agree the design
  • Or get a friend or relative to make the brides dress and bridesmaids outfits
  • Have one bridesmaid or none
  • Wear silk flowers instead of fresh
  • Choose outfits that can be worn again

The following list explains who traditionally pays for what.

The bride’s parents pay for

  • The bride’s wedding outfit
  • The bride’s going away outfit ( this usually falls to the bride )
  • Young bridesmaids and pageboys outfits ( the childrens paraent may opt to pay for this themselves if they can be worn again)
  • The chief bridesmaids outfit

  • Transport to the ceremony for groom and best man
  • Transport from the ceremony to the reception for he and his bride
